Στη διάρκεια του Β’ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου, μια ομάδα Ούγγρων στρατιωτών (σημ. η Ουγγαρία πολεμούσε στο πλευρό της ναζιστικής Γερμανίας) αναζητά αντάρτες στο κατεχόμενο τμήμα της Σοβιετικής Ένωσης. Η περιπλάνηση στο παγωμένο τοπίο τους οδηγεί σε ένα μικρό χωριό όπου είναι πιθανό να κρύβονται οι ύποπτοι δολιοφθορών. Ο λοχίας Σεμέτκα, φωτογράφος και σιωπηλός παρατηρητής, βρίσκεται ξαφνικά επικεφαλής της ομάδας αντιμέτωπος με έναν «πόλεμο» που πάντα μαίνονταν γύρω του, αλλά ποτέ δεν υπήρξε δικός του.
